lat_abbott_barb_04146483Ryan Hunter-Reay is the winner of today’s Honda Grand Prix of Alabama driving the DHL Honda for Andretti Autosport . Hunter-Reay started today’s race from the third position.

This is Hunter-Reay’s first win of the 2014 Verizon IndyCar Series season as the American-born driver looks to reclaim the Verizon IndyCar Series title.

It marks the 12th career Indy car victory for Hunter-Reay, a 32-year-old resident of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

Today’s race is Hunter-Reay’s ninth win with Andretti Autosport and he extends his distinction of being the winningest active American driver in the Verizon IndyCar Series and the first American driver to visit victory lane in 2014.

“With the rain and the wet conditions on how we started out there, it was tough. Then we went to the Firestone reds, and man – on wet surface, that was just really tough to keep the car on track. Once we got out front, though, we started checking out and it was a dream to drive the DHL car. I can’t thank the team enough – we got the No. 28 DHL Honda to victory lane at the Honda Grand Prix of Alabama…how cool is that.”

His previous Verizon IndyCar Series victories were: Milwaukee IndyFest (2013/Andretti Autosport), Barber Motorsports Park (2013/Andretti Autosport), Baltimore (2012/Andretti Autosport), Toronto (2012/Andretti Autosport), Iowa (2012/Andretti Autosport), Milwaukee (2012/Andretti Autosport), New Hampshire (2011/Andretti Autosport), Long Beach (2010/Andretti Autosport) and Watkins Glen (2008/Rahal Letterman Racing). He also has victories in the CART/Champ Car Series at Milwaukee (2004) and Surfer’s Paradise (2003).

Hunter-Reay is the only driver to score victories in the IndyCar Series, CART, Champ Car, Grand-Am and the American Le Mans series.

This is the 49th Verizon IndyCar Series victory for Andretti Autosport. Since 2003, Andretti Autosport has scored four series titles (’04/Kanaan, ’05/Wheldon, ’07/Franchitti and ’12/Hunter-Reay) and two Indianapolis 500 wins (’05/Wheldon and ’07/Franchitti).

Andretti Autosport has four full-time entries in the Verizon IndyCar Series, with Hunter-Reay, Carlos Munoz (No. 34 Cinsay Honda) Marco Andretti (No. 25 Snapple Honda) and James Hinchcliffe (No. 27 United Fiber & Data Honda)
