Ryan Hunter-Reay takes Borg-Warner Trophy to the Capitol

The month of May is just around the corner, and that means the countdown has started for America’s most iconic race.

As Indianapolis Motor Speedway preps for the 100th running of the Indianapolis 500 presented by PennGrade Motor Oil, they had to clear out a little room to dust behind the Borg-Warner Trophy, so they loaned it to Ryan Hunter-Reay.

Hunter-Reay took the trophy to Washington, D.C. to show it off to key politicos including the Speaker of the House Paul Ryan, who took some time to admire the auto racing greats who already have their faces emblazoned on the trophy.

The United States House Majority Leader Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R.-Calif.) had a particular interest in finding his hometown hero Rick Mears’ visage on the trophy. And since it adorns the award four times for victories in 1979, 1984, 1988, and 1991, it was not difficult to find. Mears also won the pole for the Indy 500 a record six times.

Indiana’s Congresswoman from the 5th District, Susan Brooks was so pleased to have a little piece of her state in the Capital that she tried to hide it on the balcony.

Hunter-Reay found it, grabbed a quick snapshot with the Congresswoman and will head back to Indianapolis to prepare for May 29th’s running of the Indy 500.
