Grand Prix of St. Petersburg Race Report

“We started on new (Firestone Alternate) Reds, but just had no grip. The fronts fell off so fast that we were just falling through the field, so we decided to come in. That kind of put the nail in the coffin – we had to save a lot of fuel every stint. We had good speed in the DHL Honda, we made some passes out there. But we had to save so much fuel in the end that we had to fight for it. It was an unfortunate day. We just had a lot of issues with how the fuel and tire situation worked out today. We’ll get back at it for Texas next weekend.”

Ryan Hunter-Reay drove his DHL Honda to a 14th finish at St. Pete. The finish moved Ryan up 3 spots in the championship standings from 24th to 21st place.

OF NOTE:

  • After going off strategy during the first caution period, the 28 DHL team pitted an extra time during the second caution of the race and put sticker (Firestone Alternate) Reds tires on to gain a few extra positions in the last stint

The NTT INDYCAR SERIES now heads straight to Texas Motor Speedway for the final race of three-in-a-row to open the 2021 season. The Texas doubleheader kicks off Saturday, May 1.
